Destiny 2 is the sequel to Destiny, which is an MMO shooter. You are a warrior of the light, better known as a guardian, who protects the last city on Earth called the Tower.
You gain magical powers by the traveler who protects everyone in the tower. Destiny 2 starts out with the tower being destroyed by the Red Legion, who are alien conquerors. The leader of the Red Legion, Ghaul, has taken the light from all of the guardians, by capturing the traveler, which means that you don't have your powers anymore and can die.
You have to escape the city, so you go to the farm, which is a camp for people without the power of the light. Once there you find out about a shard of the traveler, which you go to and you gain your powers back. After that point, your goal is to reuinite the vanguard, who are the strongest guardians, and to take down Ghaul.
After you have beaten the campaign you can play crucible, which is the pvp mode, play strikes, which you play with two other people to take down a boss, or do the raid, which takes six guardians into the most difficult pve challenge where you fight bosses and complete puzzles.
